37. Primary School "The Wheel"

SATURDAY 16 and SUNDAY 17 MARCH 2024

Meeting Point

Rue Van Winghen 11, 1070 Anderlecht

This school is a rare example of inter-war educational architecture. It was built to serve the working-class residents of "The Wheel", a social housing garden estate, and its design expresses the social and urban-planning ambitions of this model estate, built to the design of Anderlecht council's chief architect Henri Wildenblanck between 1937 and 1939. In addition to the classrooms, the building also served as a community centre for the newly built housing estate that surrounds it. It has two playgrounds and a gymnasium that also served as a community hall, a caretaker's house, a public shower block and a sports ground. Its facades feature a succession of projecting and recessed bays in a Modernist style firmly rooted in Art Deco influences which continue in its particularly carefully designed interior that features top-quality materials such as marble and tropical hardwood from the Congo.
