Friday 20 March at 7pm

Exclusive tours of Bozar will be organised before the concert "Bells of Inferno" by Stanislav Kochanovsky.

BELLS OF INFERNO

Any traveler passing through Poland may realize that existence has long been strongly governed by religion. This cultural baggage has also strongly influenced the works of several musicians. Thus Paweł Łukaszewski composed Ego sum pastor bonus (« I am a good pastor »). Witold Lutoslawski, for his part, prefered to insert solemn tone in his Concerto for Orchestra. And finally, also Henryk Mikołaj Górecki was influenced by religion, composing Totus Tuus, or « Entirly yours (Maria) » in English.

In this concert, we will also hear a piece of Rachmaninoff's work, called The Bells. One of the composer's students wrote him an anonymous letter, suggesting he set Edgar Allen Poe's eponymous poem to music. The text describes the sound of different bells, from light, silver bells to a heavy cast-iron colossus, and is often interpreted as a metaphor of life. Rachmaninoff brings the sound of the bells to life in his composition. The conductor for this evening's concert is Stanislav Kochanovski.

Friday 27 March at 7pm

Exclusive tours of Bozar will be organised before the concert of Dirk Brossé & Branford Marsalis (saxophone)

CONCERT:

Leonard Bernstein, On the town: three dance episodes
Heitor Villa-Lobos, Fantasia for Soprano Saxophone
John Corigliano, Gazebo dances
John Williams, Escapades for Saxophone (Originellement issue de la BO de "Attrape-moi si tu peux")
John Adams, Chairman dances
Branford Marsalis, Cassandra (Arrangé par Vince Mendoza)

Branford, Wynton's brother, is a member of the famous Marsalis jazz family. Few artists have had such a rich and varied career. He has performed with Sting and Miles Davis, he founded the band Buckshot Le Fonque and was the band leader on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. In the past few years he has focused on more classical work, performing with several of the world's leading orchestras (New York, Chicago, Tokyo, etc.). In collaboration with the Klara Festival and the Belgian National Orchestra, he will perform the world premiere of Cassandra, a jazz standard by Branford Marsalis, which was reworked by Vince Mendoza at BOZAR's request. You can also enjoy a tribute to the 20th century American symphonic repertoire.
