49. Residence Palace
The Swiss architect Michel Polak designed this imposing Art Deco apartment building on a monumental scale. Construction work began in 1923, for property developer Lucien Kaisin. When complete it was the largest luxury apartment complex in Europe. Apart from the 180 apartments, there was also a swimming pool, a theatre, restaurants and shops… a complex devoted to luxury and modern comforts, aimed at the international moneyed class. Today the building is home to the International Presse Center.
