60. St. Suzanne Church

Built between 1925 and 1928, this was the first of three reinforced-concrete Art Deco churches to be built in Brussels in the inter-war period. It was paid for by the widow of General Maes, in memory of her husband and her daughter Suzanne. Even though it is obvious that the church's architect Jean Combaz was inspired by Auguste Perret's Notre-Dame du Raincy church near Paris, this is a profoundly original building, laid out around enormous concrete pillars and huge stained-glass windows. The 280 stained-glass panels were made by Florent Jaspar Colpaert and others, and are set in reinforced concrete frames. They flood the church's interior with coloured daylight.
