Henry Van de Velde, 1933

Henry van de Velde, founder of the Higher Institute for Decorative Arts of La Cambre, was a man of many talents. In addition to being a painter, interior architect, writer, jewellery creator and designer, he was also a renowned architect and the most important Art Nouveau theorist. However, in the 1920s he became a supporter of Modernism. The Cohen and Wolfers Houses date from this period, as does the house of Professor Grégoire Lagasse on Dieweg, built in 1933. This design by Henry van de Velde is undoubtedly the most in line with the International Style. From the outside, the house is characterized by sleek façades with sharp ribbing and white plastered walls. Inside, all rooms are arranged around a central staircase which allows abundant light to permeate the house from the large rectangular windows that cut into those façades, thus creating a lively interplay of full and empty spaces. Since 1995 the house, which was listed in 1982, houses a 'gallery-observatory' which regularly organizes exhibitions of works by young international artists. Source: Korei guided tours

Henry van de Velde's design for this house is undoubtedly the one that most closely resembles the international style. From the outside, the house is characterised by austere façades with pointed edges and walls clad in white plaster. This light floods in generously from the large rectangular windows, which take up large sections of the façade in a lively interplay of full and empty surfaces.
Listed in 1982, since 1995 the house has housed an «observatory gallery», which regularly hosts exhibitions of works by young international artists.
