Raphaël Delville, 1935

A Belgian architect with a multi-disciplinary background in architecture, painting and sculpture, Raphaël Delville, who was a trainee with Victor Horta and a collaborator of Le Corbusier, did not produce an abundant body of work, but he did leave a body of work of great formal coherence. An emblematic work, the Maison des Terrasses in Uccle, designed in 1935, synthesises with great mastery the principles of European modernism, while adapting them to a domestic scale and a Brussels urban context. With its clear, sculptural volumetric composition, emphasised rounded horizontals and banded windows, and the integration of large terraces and a rooftop solarium designed as real living spaces, this is a perfect example of the so-called
«liner» aesthetic, characteristic of 1930s modernism.
