Guided tour of the Hôtel Riez

Built by Jean-Baptiste Dewin in 1927 at the request of the industrialist Joachim Riez, this Art Deco mansion is now carefully preserved by the CDA insurance company. It still retains its original décor and furnishings, commissioned from the De Coene firm in Kortrijk, with whom the architect collaborated regularly. The tour will take you through the entrance hall, the staircase and the reception areas upstairs, as well as a kitchen featuring its original décor.

In 1925, Adrien Blomme built this mansion at the request of his friend, the brewer Léon Wielemans. This project enabled him to establish himself as the official architect for the family of brewers and entrepreneurs, with projects such as the Métropole cinema, the extension to the Hôtel Métropole and the Wielemans-Ceuppemans brewery buildings, which now house the Wiels Centre for Contemporary Art. The design of the hotel was finalised during a trip to Spain, where the couple, accompanied by the architect, visited Andalusia and its palaces. From this trip, they brought back not only the hotel’s design brief and its distinctive layout centred around a vast internal courtyard, but also the general concept for the interior décor, which primarily combined ceramic tiles and wrought ironwork.

This Art Deco-style townhouse, built in 1927 by Jean-Baptiste Dewin on behalf of the industrialist Joachim Riez, is now well preserved by the insurance company CDA. The original décor and furnishings by the firm De Coene in Kortrijk, with whom the architect regularly collaborated, are still in place. Visit to the Wielemans Mansion

Thanks to this project, he became the regular architect for this family of brewers and entrepreneurs, with projects including the Metropole cinema, the extension to the Hotel Metropole and the buildings of the Wielemans-Ceuppemans brewery, which today house the Wiels Centre for Contemporary Art. The idea for the design and interior of the house arose during a trip to Spain, where Léon Wielemans and his wife visited the palaces of Andalusia in the architect’s company. The Moorish palaces provided the direct inspiration both for the distinctive layout centred around a large inner courtyard and for the interior decoration, with ceramic tiles and ironwork playing a prominent role.
