Victor Horta, 1897–1900
This nursery school was commissioned in 1895 by Mayor Charles Buls from Victor Horta. The stone façade is punctuated by alternating light and dark bands. Whilst the pillars and bell tower are reminiscent of Gothic architecture, the glazed canopy over the entrance door unmistakably links the building to the Art Nouveau style. Inside, the architect designed a slender metal framework supporting the glass roof of the covered courtyard. Light is ever-present here. The meticulous renovation of the school in 1999 by the architect Barbara Van der Wee has made it one of the key examples of Art Nouveau in the Marolles district.
