24. Tassel Hotel

This mansion, built in 1893 by Victor Horta for his friend Professor Émile Tassel, occupies a prominent place in the history of architecture. It is, in fact, the first example of the Brussels Art Nouveau style. As such, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. All the characteristics that Horta would later develop in his other residential designs are brought together in this work: the use of an exposed iron structure, the integration of decoration into the structure, spatial fluidity, and an abundance of natural light thanks to the inclusion of a central skylight… A true ‘portrait house’, it perfectly met the specific requirements of its client.
