Octave Van Rysselberghe,
1896–1898
Between 1894 and 1897, the architect Octave Van Rysselberghe designed this hotel with its striking Art Nouveau façade, featuring asymmetrical elements. The interior is centred around a stairwell providing access to the various rooms, most of which are separated from one another by a few steps. Henry van de Velde collaborated on the interior design. The client, Paul Otlet, was a visionary and multifaceted figure: a Belgian author, entrepreneur, lawyer, activist, socialist and pacifist.
