64. Coppens House

The Coppens House is the work of the architect Charles Van Nueten, a somewhat forgotten but nonetheless very important figure. The house was built in 1936, the year Van Nueten was appointed professor at the Higher Institute of Decorative Arts – La Cambre. Much like the Barbier townhouse in Laeken, it is a house with a reinforced concrete structure and clean lines. The current owner has had the façade restored in accordance with Van Nueten’s original design, with glazed tiles in the lower section and a return to the original arrangement of the windows. The rather minimalist interior design – featuring, in particular, terrazzo stair treads, a travertine fireplace and Oregon pine doors – further enhances the house’s spatial qualities. The tour also briefly touches on the creations and projects of the resident, the designer Damian O’Sullivan.
