38. Van Bruystegem House

Designed in 1924 by François Van Meulecom, this bourgeois house features a façade of elegant symmetry. A former pupil and later principal collaborator of Jean-Baptiste Dewin – a leading figure in geometric Art Nouveau and Art Deco – the architect built numerous other residential properties in the Brussels Region that can still be seen today: mansions, apartment blocks and social housing. Particularly well-preserved, this residence, built for a certain Alphonse Van Bruystegem and his wife, exemplifies the typical ‘Art Deco without ostentation’ style, of which many examples emerged in the Altitude Cent neighbourhood. Inhabited by a passionate owner, it comes alive with collections of Art Deco objects and furniture, painstakingly sourced from the four corners of Europe.
