41. Villa Berteaux

Designed by the Belgian architect Louis-Herman De Koninck for a couple – the engineer Raoul Berteaux and the surgeon Jeanne Rinskopf, the Berteaux Villa is a modernist building erected in 1936–1937 in the Fort-Jaco neighbourhood, which at the time was still largely undeveloped. Featuring a simple geometric form and an open-plan layout, it is constructed from in-situ reinforced concrete.
Having meticulously restored the house since 2007, returning it to its original form and splendour, the current owners have taken particular care to restore and adapt to modern standards the famous Cubex kitchen units – the first modular fitted kitchen design conceived in the 1930s by De Koninck, which, once mass-produced, would become the benchmark for modern kitchens.
